Who this workshop is for

This course is for professionals in any role who are involved with the creation of online services.

The course was designed for the needs of Australian Public Service (APS) staff at level 6 and above, but is appropriate for any industry.

Workshop content

The workshop involves three activities that build on the theme of accessible face-to-face conferences.

Each activity builds on the last to explain and utilise the principles of inclusive design.

This course uses video of user research with a disabled person. Conducting user research with a disabled person is not included in the session.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Describe the medical model of disability
Describe the social model of disability
Define ‘impairments’ and ‘barriers’
Describe permanent, temporary, and situational impairments
Describe different kinds of barries (physical, communicational, organisational, technological, attitudinal)
Describe what inclusion is
Describe the three principles of inclusive design
Understand that there are risks associated with attempting design for disability without consulting people with disabilities
Understand that good intentions are not sufficient in delivering accessible services
Describe ways of championing accessibility with stakeholders
